Early life in Sacramento

Gardner is American and was born in Sacramento [1] [4]. Her full name is Virginia Elizabeth Gardner [4] [5]. The sources we could open say little about her family, and we leave private details out. What they do show is a child who was active. W Magazine reports that she began taekwondo around second grade and had a black belt by about fifth or sixth grade [7]. As a teenager she also modelled for brands including Abercrombie & Fitch and Kohl's [7].

That martial arts background mattered later. Before Runaways she told W Magazine: "I have a black belt in taekwondo, so I have a little bit of stunt training already." She added that she is "clumsy and uncoordinated" and hired a trainer to work on her footwork for the role [7].

AdoroCinema dates her screen debut to 2011, a small part in the CW series Hart of Dixie, followed by an appearance on Lab Rats in 2012 and on Glee [4]. TMDB lists two Glee episodes, in which she played Marissa and Katie Fitzgerald, and eight episodes of The Goldbergs as Lexy Bloom [1]. Sources disagree on some of these years, so treat the dates as approximate: AdoroCinema places The Goldbergs in 2015, while TMDB dates it to 2013 [4] [1].

In 2015 she appeared as Sally Landry in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and as Molly Bartlett in How to Get Away with Murder [1].

The break: Project Almanac and Runaways

Her first prominent film role was Christina Raskin in the found-footage science-fiction film Project Almanac [1]. Rotten Tomatoes dates the film to 2015, while TMDB lists 2013, the year it was made; AdoroCinema shows both 2014 and 2015 [3] [1] [4]. Both TMDB and AdoroCinema name it among the work she is best known for [1] [4].

The larger step was Karolina Dean in Marvel's Runaways. The Hulu series premiered in November 2017, and W Magazine described her then as a 22-year-old California native [7]. AdoroCinema calls Karolina a lead role across all three seasons [4], and TMDB credits her with 33 episodes [1]. Of the character she said: "She's struggling with a lot internally and who she's pretending to be and who she actually is." [7]

In 2018 she played Vicky in David Gordon Green's Halloween [1] [3]. eCartelera notes that she made two films with Green: Halloween and the earlier Goat (2016), in which she played Leah [5]. Fall

Fall (2022) is the film most readers now look her up for. Directed by Scott Mann, it follows two friends who climb a 2,000-foot radio tower in the desert and become stranded at the top [10]. Grace Caroline Currey plays Becky and Gardner plays Shiloh Hunter, a character the Yahoo box-office report calls Hunter [1] [11].

Lionsgate opened it in 1,548 North American venues, and tracking before the weekend projected only $1 million to $2 million [11]. Reviews were mixed. Variety's Owen Gleiberman called it a "fun, occasionally cheesy, but mostly ingeniously made thriller" [11]. Fangoria later reported that it earned more than $20 million on a $3 million budget [10]. That return led to two sequels, Fall 2 and Fall 3, which Capstone Studios greenlit [10].

Release dates for the later titles also vary. Rotten Tomatoes puts Beautiful Disaster in 2023 and TMDB in 2022, and FILMSTARTS gives 6 April 2023 [3] [1] [6]. FILMSTARTS dates 1923 to 23 February 2025 and Beautiful Wedding to 9 May 2024 [6].

Beautiful Disaster and the romance films

In Beautiful Disaster she played Abby Abernathy opposite Dylan Sprouse, and she repeated the role in the sequel Beautiful Wedding [1] [4] [3]. Rotten Tomatoes also credits her as an executive producer on See You on Venus, where she plays Mia [3]. Alongside these she took smaller parts in F Marry Kill, in which she is Kelly, and in A Breed Apart [1]. In the series 1923 she plays Mabel in three episodes [1].

Gardner's partner is Jed Elliott, bassist of the band The Struts. Promiflash reported in July 2021 that they had become engaged, quoting her Instagram caption, "A million times yes" in German translation, and that they had been public about their relationship since April 2020 [12]. In April 2023 Promiflash still described the pair as engaged and quoted her as saying she knew at their first meeting that she wanted to marry him [13].
