Fran Drescher is an American actress born on 30 September 1957 in Flushing, Queens, New York. She co-created and starred in the CBS sitcom The Nanny (1993 to 1999), led SAG-AFTRA through the 2023 strike and appeared in the 2025 film Marty Supreme.
Fran Drescher is 69. She was born on 30 September 1957 in Flushing, Queens, and turned 69 on 30 September 2026 [9] [13]. Most people know her as Fran Fine, the loud, loyal nanny from Queens in The Nanny, a CBS sitcom she co-created and starred in. In the years since she has also campaigned on women's health and served as president of the actors' union SAG-AFTRA. In 2025 she played a mother on screen again, in the film Marty Supreme.
Growing up in Queens
She was born Francine Drescher in Flushing, the younger of two children, and grew up in Kew Gardens Hills [7]. She went to Hillcrest High School, where one of her schoolmates was the actor Ray Romano [7]. Her interest in acting began in junior high school. In 1973 she was first runner-up in the Miss New York Teenager contest [7].
After school she and her future husband, Peter Marc Jacobson, worked as discount hairdressers in Manhattan while they tried to get acting work [7]. Fandango dates their marriage to 1978 and says they then moved to Los Angeles [8].
First roles and the road to The Nanny
The start was small. Drescher had a minor speaking role opposite John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, released in 1977 [7]. Fandango lists the film as 1978 and calls it a dancer cameo, so the sources differ on the detail [8].
In the 1980s she worked in comic supporting parts. She appeared in Gorp and in This Is Spinal Tap (1984), where she played the publicist Bobbi Flekman [7] [8]. Television guest spots followed on Silver Spoons, Who's the Boss? and Night Court, and each one made her a little more familiar to producers [7].
The Nanny, 1993 to 1999
The break was a show she built herself. Drescher and Jacobson co-created The Nanny, in which she played Fran Fine, a Jewish beautician from Queens who becomes the nanny of three children on the Upper East Side [6]. TODAY describes the character as a fictionalised version of Drescher herself [6]. The series ran on CBS from 1993 to 1999 and lasted six seasons [10] [14]. Charles Shaughnessy played her employer, Maxwell Sheffield [10].
The show earned her recognition from the industry. The Television Academy lists two Emmy nominations for her, in 1996 and 1997, both for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series [1]. The Golden Globe Awards list two nominations as well, for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy, in 1996 and 1997 [2]. Neither organisation lists a win for her. Some profile pages claim otherwise, so it is worth checking the award bodies directly.
She also kept writing and acting outside the series. Her memoir Enter Whining came out in 1995 [6]. Fandango credits her with work for Francis Ford Coppola in Jack (1996) and for Woody Allen in Picking Up the Pieces (2000) [8]. In the second season of The Nanny, Fran refuses to cross a picket line. Her line was: "Never, ever, ever cross a picket line" [6].
Divorce, illness and a second public role
Drescher and Jacobson divorced in 1999 [8] [6]. TODAY reports that he came out as gay after the divorce [6]. Fandango says the two stayed close friends and business partners [8]. Her later sitcom Happily Divorced, which ran from 2011 to 2013 and which she produced, was built on a similar premise: a florist who stays close to her gay ex-husband [7] [8].
In June 2000 she was diagnosed with uterine cancer after two years of misdiagnoses by eight doctors, according to the Cancer Schmancer Movement. She had surgery and was later given a clean bill of health [3]. She wrote the book Cancer Schmancer (2002) about the experience [6]. She explains the name this way: "Cancer Schmancer means 'cancer is not the boss of me'" [3]. In 2007 she founded the nonprofit of the same name, which aims to get women's cancers caught at Stage 1 [6] [3]. In 2008 she was appointed a U.S. public diplomacy envoy for women's health [6].
Other screen work
After The Nanny she kept working across sitcoms, voice acting and cameos. The list below is limited to titles the sources confirm.

TODAY also lists Entourage, Broad City and VC Andrews: Dawn among her later credits [6]. Fandango lists the NBC sitcom Indebted from 2020, but gives its run as ongoing, so we do not state an end date [8].
President of SAG-AFTRA
Drescher became president of SAG-AFTRA in 2021 after an election that LA Magazine called "melodramatic", as TODAY recalls [6]. The test came in 2023, when the union went on strike. She said then: "We have financially prepared ourselves for the next six months" [6]. TheWrap says her tenure covered both the 2023 TV and theatrical strike and the interactive media strike of 2024 and 2025 [16].
She chose not to seek re-election. That cleared the way for Sean Astin, who was elected as her successor in 2025 [16] [17].
Marty Supreme and 2025
Variety reported on 4 October 2024 that Drescher had joined Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme as the mother of Timothée Chalamet's title character, a ping pong player [15]. The A.V. Club noted it was her first role since the strike ended, and that she was also expected in the Spinal Tap sequel [15]. VOL.AT reports that the film won a Golden Globe and is nominated for nine Oscars, including best picture [9].
On 30 September 2025, her 68th birthday, she received the 2,822nd star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, in the Motion Pictures category [5]. Jacobson was due to emcee, and the Hollywood Museum planned an exhibit about her career for the next day [5] [4]. The actors Lisa Ann Walter, Nicholle Tom and Madeline Zima attended [4]. In December 2025 she appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers to talk about her early career and the film [14].
What Fran Drescher is doing now
In February 2026 she was the guest of Jacqueline Lugner at the Vienna Opera Ball on 12 February, with an appearance at Lugner City beforehand [9]. It was not her first Vienna visit. She had been at the Life Ball in 2009 and at a gala in the Hofburg in 2010 [9].
In late March 2026 she reunited in Los Angeles with Charles Shaughnessy at the premiere of the musical Somebody to Love, written by The Nanny writers Rob Sternin and Prudence Fraser [10]. Drescher posted a photo of them with the Playbill and wrote that the production "w/a great cast was very entertaining & moving" [10].
The latest report is from the start of October 2026. On 1 October she attended the New York City Ballet 2026 Fall Fashion Gala at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, a day after her 69th birthday [13]. She also went to the opening party for Brasserie Boulud in Lincoln Plaza, where she was photographed with friends including Al Roker [13].
