Tobey Maguire

American actor best known for playing Spider-Man in Sam Raimi's trilogy

· ✓ Orbivida Fact Check (automated) · Last reviewed:

Tobey Maguire is the American actor born on 27 June 1975 in Santa Monica, California, best known for playing Peter Parker in the Spider-Man films of 2002, 2004 and 2007. His only Golden Globe nomination was for Brothers, listed under 2010. His last documented film role is Babylon in 2022.

Tobey Maguire is 51 years old as of 3 November 2026. He was born on 27 June 1975 in Santa Monica, California [1] [3]. The question that follows him now is not about his age but about his future: Marvel did not list him in the cast it announced for Avengers: Doomsday on 26 March 2025, and we found no official confirmation of a return since [12].

A childhood spent moving

Tobias Vincent Maguire was born to Vincent and Wendy, who were young and not married when he arrived. They married soon afterwards, but the marriage did not last [1]. He spent much of his early childhood moving between households in California, Washington and Oregon [1].

His mother worked as a secretary. She encouraged him to take acting lessons and drove him to auditions in Hollywood [1]. By ninth grade he had left school to concentrate on acting [1]. Those are the public facts about his family life as a child. We leave out the rest, because the sources we could open do not state it.

Small parts and a cancelled sitcom

The first screen work was modest. Biography.com lists one- and two-line roles on Roseanne and Blossom [1]. In 1992 he led the series Great Scott!, which was cancelled after nine weeks [1]. In 1995 he took a small part in Empire Records, but he left the production and his scenes were cut [1]. He also appeared in Duke of Groove, a short film that was nominated for an Oscar [1].

None of this made him known to a wide audience. What changed the direction was a run of independent and literary films in the late 1990s. In 1997 he appeared in Woody Allen's Deconstructing Harry and played Paul Hood in Ang Lee's The Ice Storm, a part that earned critical praise [1]. In 1998 he led Pleasantville, playing David Wagner [1] [5], and had a small role in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas [1].

The break: The Cider House Rules and Wonder Boys

The film that gave him a lead in a major studio drama was The Cider House Rules (1999), in which he played Homer Wells, an orphan at the centre of the story, alongside Charlize Theron, Michael Caine and Paul Rudd [4]. The film received seven Academy Award nominations [1]. A year later he played the student writer James Leer opposite Michael Douglas in Wonder Boys (2000) [1] [6].

By the end of 2000 he had a record of serious roles in respected films, and then came the biggest part of his career.

Spider-Man, 2002 to 2007

In Spider-Man (2002) Maguire played Peter Parker and the hero of the title [3]. Biography.com reports that he was paid $4 million for the role and that the film earned $114 million in its opening weekend, a box-office record at the time [1]. Both figures are as reported by that outlet, and we have not checked them against studio filings.

He returned for Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007) [3]. In an interview with CBS News and the Associated Press published on 9 April 2007, a few weeks before the third film opened on 4 May, he said he was unsure whether he would play the character a fourth time but that he "might do another 'Spider-Man' movie" [7]. He described the character in the third film as becoming arrogant and self-involved after the public adores him [7].

Between the films

The Spider-Man years did not stop him from taking other work. In Seabiscuit (2003) he played the jockey Johnny "Red" Pollard and was also an executive producer [3]. He appeared in The Good German (2006) as Tully [3], and in a cameo in Tropic Thunder (2008) [1].

In Brothers (2009) he played Sam Cahill [3]. The performance brought his only Golden Globe nomination, for best actor in a motion picture drama, listed under 2010 by the Golden Globe Awards [2]. He has no wins listed there [2].

In The Great Gatsby (2013) he played Nick Carraway opposite Leonardo DiCaprio [1] [3]. In Pawn Sacrifice he played the chess champion Bobby Fischer and was also a producer [3]. Biography.com dates that film to 2015, while Rotten Tomatoes and Entertainment Tonight tie it to 2014, so we use 2014 [1] [9].

Seven years away and a return

After Pawn Sacrifice he did not appear in a feature film for years. When Babylon was photographed on set in Los Angeles in August 2021, Entertainment Tonight described it as his first on-screen film role since 2014 [9]. In April 2022 The Daily Beast noted that apart from a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home and a voice part in The Boss Baby, he had not starred in a film since 2014 [10].

Spider-Man: No Way Home was released on 17 December 2021 [13]. In Babylon, Damien Chazelle's film about Hollywood in the late 1920s, he played James McKay and was an executive producer [3]. Casting reports in April 2022 had said he would play Charlie Chaplin [10]. The later credit lists the role as James McKay, so the early reports and the final credit differ.

Awards

The award record is short. The Golden Globe Awards list one nomination for Maguire, in 2010 for Brothers, and no wins [2]. The Cider House Rules collected seven Oscar nominations as a film, but those were not nominations for him [1].

Sobriety and personal life

Maguire has spoken about this himself. In the 2007 CBS interview he said he began attending Alcoholics Anonymous at 19 and described himself as having "an addictive nature" [7]. Biography.com says he is a vegan and has been sober since 19 [1].

He met the jewellery designer Jennifer Meyer in 2003, while he was filming Seabiscuit [11]. They became engaged in April 2006 and their daughter Ruby was born in November 2006 [11]. They married in Hawaii in September 2007; his publicist confirmed the wedding to the Associated Press [8] [11]. A son, Otis, was born in May 2009 [11].

They separated in October 2016, and Meyer filed for divorce in October 2020 [11]. Court documents reported by the Australian Associated Press in October 2026 show a judgment dated 21 September declaring them single, filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court [11]. The court handled other issues separately, and their details are not public [11]. We do not cover the children beyond these public facts.

Net worth

We do not give a net worth figure. We did not find an estimate from a named outlet such as Forbes or Bloomberg that we could open and date, and the style guide of this site allows only that. The only money figure we cite is the $4 million Biography.com reports for the first Spider-Man, which is one fee and not a wealth estimate [1].

What he is doing now

As of 3 November 2026, the last film roles we can document are the No Way Home cameo in 2021 and Babylon in 2022 [10] [3]. Marvel's announced cast for Avengers: Doomsday did not include him when it was published on 26 March 2025 [12]. Stories about a return are unconfirmed, and until Marvel or Sony says so, this page does not treat them as fact.
