Cynthia Erivo is {age} years old. She was born on 8 January 1987 in Stockwell, South London, and has won a Tony, two Grammys and a Daytime Emmy [12] [6] [8]. She has also been nominated for two Golden Globes for playing Elphaba in the Wicked films [9]. She has not won an Oscar: at the ceremony on 2 March 2025, where she was nominated for Wicked, Mikey Madison won Best Actress for Anora [13].
Growing up in Stockwell
Erivo was born in Stockwell to Nigerian parents of Igbo heritage, who had lived through the Nigerian civil war [4]. She was raised by her mother, Edith, a nurse and single parent, who has spoken publicly about struggling to find food, safety and shelter [4]. Erivo later named her production company Edith's Daughter, founded in August 2020 [2].
She attended La Retraite Roman Catholic Girls' School on Atkins Road in Clapham Park [4]. After school she studied at the University of East London, then moved to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) [4]. One account says she briefly studied music psychology before winning her place at RADA [5]. She graduated in 2010 [5].
First stage work, 2010 to 2014
Her first stage appearance was at the Brighton Festival in 2010 [4]. London Theatre Direct lists several early credits from the years that followed, though it does not date each one: Marine Parade at the Brighton Festival, I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky at Theatre Royal Stratford East, and the Old Vic's 24 Hour Musicals gala [5]. She also toured the UK as Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act, played Chenice in I Can't Sing! at the London Palladium, and appeared in the European premiere of Dessa Rose at Trafalgar Studios [5].
The Color Purple
In 2013 Erivo played Celie in The Color Purple at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London [5]. In 2015 she repeated the part in the Broadway revival, alongside Jennifer Hudson and Danielle Brooks [5]. The show made her name in New York. She won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for it [6] [5].
The album followed. On 12 February 2017 the cast recording won the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album, beating recordings from Bright Star, Fiddler on the Roof, Kinky Boots and Waitress [7]. Erivo, Brooks and Hudson were the principal soloists and shared the award with the producers and writers [7]. At the same ceremony she sang "God Only Knows" with John Legend during the In Memoriam segment [7]. The cast also won a Daytime Emmy for performing on the Today show [6] [5]. Sources disagree on the year of that Emmy, so this page gives none.
Screen career
Her first television role was in Michaela Coel's Chewing Gum in 2015 [4]. The film that changed her screen career was Harriet (2019), in which she played the abolitionist Harriet Tubman [4]. The nominations announced in January 2020 gave her two Oscar nominations in one year, for Best Actress and, as co-writer of "Stand Up", for Best Original Song [6]. She also received a Golden Globe nomination for the film [2].
HBO's The Outsider premiered on 12 January 2020 with Erivo in the cast [2]. In March 2021 she played Aretha Franklin in National Geographic's Genius: Aretha, which brought a 2021 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie [1] [3]. She starred in and produced Drift, which premiered at Sundance on 22 January 2023 and reached cinemas on 26 March 2024, and she wrote and recorded its original song "It Would Be" [1]. In 2023 she appeared opposite Idris Elba in Luther: The Fallen Sun, released by Netflix on 10 March [4] [2].
