Yan Diomande

Yan Diomande is a 19-year-old Ivorian winger who was born on 14 November 2006 in Abidjan [4] [5]. In 2025/26 he played for RB Leipzig and won the Bundesliga's Rookie of the Season award [1]. In August 2026 Real Madrid announced his signing on a contract that runs to 30 June 2033 [2] [3].

Youth in the United States

He did not come to Europe directly. He went to the United States to study and play football, and he was spotted at an international tournament [5]. He moved to Florida alone and trained at a high school and at the DME Academy in Daytona Beach [5]. He also had trials with two Major League Soccer clubs, the Colorado Rapids and Charlotte FC, which did not lead to a contract. He concluded that the United States did not suit him [5].

Two European trials also failed to produce a contract. A trial with Rangers in October 2023 did not lead to a signing, and a later trial with Olympiacos did not work out either [5].

From Leganés to Leipzig

His route to the Bundesliga ran through Spain. La Libre reports that he arrived at Leganés from the United States for €1.5 million and signed his first professional contract there [5]. His first minutes came at the end of March at the Santiago Bernabéu, in front of 73,000 spectators [5].

Leipzig then paid for him. La Libre says he was resold for €20 million to Leipzig as early as the July after his Leganés spell [5]. Leipzig coach Ole Werner told La Libre that the talent was not given to him, because he already had it [5].

The 2025/26 season in numbers

The Bundesliga's award page gives his league totals as 12 goals and eight assists [1]. Africa Soccer reports the same figures across 33 league appearances [6]. The league also says he "has attempted more dribbles than any other player in the division and contested the most duels" [1].

The Bundesliga's Under-21 team of the season calls him "well on his way to becoming a superstar". It credits him with a league-high 437 duels won and places him in the league's top ten for sprints, intensive runs and top speed [13].

A wider total exists. A later Bundesliga page counts all competitions and gives 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 appearances [9]. Those are not league figures, so they should not be read as his Bundesliga record.

On a Saturday in the 13th matchday, Leipzig beat Eintracht Frankfurt 6-0 at home. Diomande scored three goals between the 47th and 65th minutes, completing the hat-trick in 18 minutes [8].

The Rookie of the Season vote

To count as a rookie, a player must be under 23 on the first matchday, must not have been in a starting line-up in any previous Bundesliga season, and must not have more than 450 Bundesliga minutes before the season begins [1]. The award is drawn from the Rookie of the Month winners, and the final vote weighted fans at 40%, clubs at 30% and experts at 30% [1]. He beat Luka Vušković of Hamburger SV and Ibrahim Maza of Bayer Leverkusen, the other two finalists [1]. The Bundesliga's report of the result is dated 18 May 2026 [1].

The league describes him as "a constant threat in one-on-one situations" [1]. In a Bundesliga Man of the Match count published on 22 December 2025, he had seven votes [14].

Golden Boy nomination and pre-season

The Bundesliga named him among the top 25 nominees for the Golden Boy 2026 award, and said the winner would be announced in November [9].

He did not travel with his Leipzig team-mates to the pre-season camp in Saalfelden, Austria, at first, because he was recovering from an illness [10]. The league says he is now fit to start his preparations for 2026/27 after a full recovery [10].

Ivory Coast career

On 14 October 2025 Ivory Coast beat Kenya 3-0 to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, twelve years after its last appearance at the tournament [11]. Diomande scored in the 54th minute [11].

At the World Cup he made his debut against Ecuador, which Ivory Coast won [7]. He was 19 years and 212 days old, the first teenager to play a World Cup match for Ivory Coast, according to FIFA's site as cited by Fratmat [7].

The Real Madrid transfer and the fee

Real Madrid announced the signing on Thursday 6 August 2026 [2]. The contract is for seven years, until 30 June 2033 [2]. The beIN report does not state a transfer fee [2].

The fee figures differ. The Press Association reported £115.8 million and said it understood the figure, in a report dated 6 August 2026 [3]. IANS, published by the Free Press Journal, reported a fee of around 130 million euros without naming an original source [12]. The sources read for this page do not confirm either figure from the club.
