Gifi asks for judicial restructuring as 32 stores move to Grand Frais

·

Gifi, the French discount chain, asked for a judicial restructuring procedure on 20 October 2026, according to several French outlets [s:journaldugeek-gifi] [s:tribunaldunet-gifi]. The plan sells 32 stores to Grand Frais, and ten stores have already closed for good [s:demotivateur-gifi]. The sources do not agree on how far the court process has gone.

What happened

Gifi, the French discount chain that sells decoration and low-priced goods, asked for a redressement judiciaire on 20 October 2026 [1] [2].

The reports do not agree on how far the process has gone. Journal du Geek and Le Tribunal du Net say the request was made on 20 October [1] [2]. Demotivateur says management planned to file with the commercial court in Toulouse, and its article does not say the filing had been made [3]. Kohen Avocats reports that no opening judgment had been published in the Bodacc, the official legal notices bulletin, so the court had not yet ruled [4].

Journal du Geek's headline says the chain "will be completely liquidated", but the article describes a restructuring and does not use the word liquidation [1]. None of the sources reviewed confirms a liquidation.

The store plan

The centre of the story is a plan to sell 32 stores to Grand Frais. The contracts were signed in autumn 2025, before the procedure began [3].

Demotivateur gives the split as 17 stores run directly by Grand Frais and 14 under a gérance-mandat arrangement, where a manager runs the store within a framework set by the group [3] [2]. It adds one Bayonne store, which depends on Gifi 48, the entity that groups former Tati stores [3]. Le Tribunal du Net's version of the split adds up to 31 and does not name the 32nd store [2].

Conversions began on 1 June 2026. Four or five stores close each month to make way for Grand Frais, and each conversion takes at least three to four months of work [1] [3].

Ten stores have closed for good. Journal du Geek and Demotivateur list them, including the stores in Thiais, Lyon and Toulouse [1] [3]. Le Tribunal du Net also reports ten permanent closures [2].

Demotivateur gives opening dates for nine of the converted sites, ranging from autumn 2026 to March 2027. It says no date has been announced for the other 23 [3].

Staff, creditors and the company's message

Gifi has 513 stores and about 6,000 employees in France [3] [4]. Patrick Puy, the new chairman of the management board, wrote to staff that "our stores remain open" and that employment contracts are unchanged [3].

Creditors face a deadline once the court rules. Under the general rules that Kohen Avocats describes, unpaid claims that predate the judgment must be declared within two months of its publication in the Bodacc [4]. Demotivateur applies the same deadline to customers holding unused gift cards or credit notes [3].

Background

Gifi announced eleven store closures and about 300 job cuts in April 2025 [1] [3]. Journal du Geek says the chain has struggled against Action, B&M, Temu and Shein [1].

What comes next

The next formal step is the court's decision and its publication in the Bodacc, which starts the creditors' deadlines [4] [3]. Three questions remain open.

The first is which court will handle the case. Demotivateur says Toulouse, but Le Tribunal du Net does not name a court [3] [2]. The second is when the 23 sites without an announced date will open [3]. The third is the Calais store, which remains open for now, although its future is uncertain [2].
